It was a chilly autumn night. Everything was covered in a slight mist that was giving everything a dream-like feeling. The full moon was enlightening the landscape, throwing dark shadows on the ground, its light was glittering on the bosom of the calm and peaceful lake. Everything was undisturbed, silent, in a silent and unbreakable symbiosis, as if drawn on an ancient canvas.
The only thing that didn’t fit the scenery was a tall, dark-clothed figure sitting on the bank of the lake. His presence wasn’t really disturbing, he was sitting there silently, with his hood off so the moon enlightened his pale face and made his fire-red hair glitter.
He was thinking deeply, a small wrinkle between his eyebrows spoke of his concentration. He was looking at a tall and ancient oak tree that had an enormous crack on his body, caused probably by a strong lightning stroke. He kept his eyes pinned to the tree, every muscle in his body was tense, he was gathering his powers.
“What are you doing here?”
A girl’s voice sounded from beneath the trees. All that could be seen was the same dark cloak as he was wearing, but worn by a rather smaller woman.
“Axel?”
He didn’t respond. He kept concentrating on the tree, sitting there without a single move. Everything was silent, except Larxene’s soft steps in the grass as she was approaching him. She stopped by his side, looking in the direction of his glare.
“You know this is not going to-“
Before she could finish the sentence though, the huge oak tree caught on fire. Suddenly, as if by magic it started burning wildly and the flames were reaching up to the sky, its reflection dancing on their faces in warm colors.
“solve anything.”
Axel bowed his head down and breathed out deeply.
“What do you want?” he finally spoke. Larxene always loved the sound of his voice, it was as smooth as a hot caramel and yet tough and dangerous, like a burning flame.
“I don’t want anything. I just wanted to make sure you won’t do anything stupid again.”
The tree kept burning, the flames were licking all its branches and twigs, turning them into a soft dust that was floating in the air. The warmth coming from the fire felt somehow unearthly.
“I don’t need you to look after me. I don’t need anyone to do that. I’m fine,” he spoke and looked up to her. His green eyes were filled with pain and loneliness, and a lack of energy.
“I know you are. But I just thought you shouldn’t be alone all the time.”
She kept standing next to him, didn’t sit down. He looked away from her and took his right glove off. Then he picked up a little twig from the ground with a bare hand and broke it between his fingers. With a piece that stayed between his thumb and index finger he drew something on the ground.
“Larxene why are you doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“Just…” he stayed silent for a while, looking at the burning tree, as if searching for the right words. “caring for me.”
Larxene didn’t answer. She looked at the tree too. Then she spread her arms, closed her eyes and let a huge cloud appear on the clear night sky. The cloud was filled with thunder lightning and flashovers. She made the lightning strike the burning tree and it broke in two halves, the wood making a loud, almost painful noise. Then she opened her eyes and looked at him. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and she could clearly see the surprise on his face. Then she turned her back on him, letting her coat sweep over his shoulder, and walked away.
“Wait…” he said silently, looking back, but she’s already disappeared. The wrecked tree was adrift by the flames and the electricity was still crackling beneath the flames strongly. He stood up and looked up to the sky – the moonlight seemed so unimportant in comparing to what he created, together with her. Within a second, he put on his hood and disappeared, too.
A soft knock on the door woke her up from her shallow, restless sleep.
“Yes, come in.”
The door opened silently and Axel entered her room. It was dark, she only had one candle burning on her beside table. He smiled almost unnoticeably when seeing that – there were so many other ways how to get light in the Castle, but Larxene always chose fire.
“It’s you,” she moaned and layed back down on the pillow, closing her eyes. “What is it?”
He came up to her bed, looking down at her. Suddenly, she wasn’t the dangerous, savage nymph anymore. She was a tiny young woman, a cute blue-eyed girl, that was what he saw her like now, at night, when noone else was around to see her.
“I just came to see you,” he said and sat down on the bed. “And thank you.”
“What for?” she asked, with her eyes still closed.
“For showing me the way,” he purred in her ear silently, and kissed it softly. She opened her eyes and turned her face to him. They were so close she could feel his hot breathing, smell his cinnamon scent, and suddenly she just wanted to give in to him, let him overrule and take over her. He kissed her lips and could feel a slight and very pleasant electric vibrations that she sent to him, without noticing.
Larxene breathed out and looked up at him. He took all her strength by this one kiss, she felt so weak, and for the first time in her life, she loved it.
“I want you,” he said, running with his lips across her spine.
“I’m yours,” she responded breathlessly.
